What is a Teaching Support Role (Teaching Fellow/Teaching Assistant)?
Teaching Support roles assist our instructors in the execution and management of a course by facilitating class activities, leading sections, supporting students, grading work, and handling course-related administrative tasks.
The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) has two types of in-class Teaching Support- Teaching Fellows and Teaching Assistants. The major difference is that current students who hold these roles are covered by the Harvard Graduate Students Union (HGSU-UAW) bargaining agreement and are therefore Union positions. Non-students hold an exempt non-union position.
Who is Eligible?
- HGSE doctoral students year 3 and above
- Doctoral students from other Harvard schools (year 3 and above for most schools)
- 2nd year (only) EdLD students
- HGSE alumni
- In rare cases, HGSE will consider scholars who do not fall within these categories; however, approval will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
How do I find out about open Teaching Support roles?
Open Teaching Support positions will be circulated first to our doctoral student population. After that, they will be sent via email to all alumni who have completed the Teaching Support Interest survey. If you wish to be added to the survey list and you meet the eligibility criteria, please email Kristin Foster at kristin_foster@gse.harvard.edu for survey access.
